Current Reads #32

It’s time to get into my Current Reads! 2018 is such a dope reading year so far! I’ve had some duds, but most of the books I’ve read have been pretty amazing. I hope this trend continues.

heroHero by Lauren Rowe- Hero is a contemporary romance about a firefighter who is badly injured, and the physical therapist who brings him back from the brink. This is my first time reading a romance novel that features a first responder. So far I’m digging it!

the skin The Skin Above My Knee by Marcia Butler- Memoirs are everything! I really enjoy learning about how others create, or overcome their issues. I read about this memoir on Buzzfeed Books, and it sounded like my kind of read. “The unflinching story of a professional oboist who finds order and beauty in music as her personal life threatens to destroy her.”

one hundredOne Hundred Breaths Later by Haley Stumbo- Amazon suggested this poetry collection to me. “Taken straight from the journals these poetic memoirs came from, One Hundred Breaths Later is a collection of love, loss, guilt, strength, and what it feels like to be vulnerable in a world that is resilient.”

nejmaNejma by Nayyirah Waheed- I’ve heard amazing things about this poet. I bought this collection with a quickness! I can’t wait to really dig in.

Thanks for checking out my post! Let me know what you’re reading!

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #31

Hi, homies! It’s Sunday March, 11, and I’m listening to a little Sade as I write this Current Reads post. I hope everyone is having a blessed weekend filled with great books. I’m reading four books at the moment, but two of them are poetry collections. Usually, I’m always reading a physical book, and an e-book simultaneously. This week I guess I’m a tad bit greedy. Does anyone else ever read more than one book at the same time? Let me know in the comments. Let’s get into these new books of mine.

auditionAudition by Ryu Murakami- Audition is a Japanese thriller with a reputation for not afraid to go there. I’ve been wanting to read this novel for the longest! The story is about a widower who holds a fake audition to find a new wife. The woman he “casts” is seemingly perfect, but homegurl has some issues. I just started the book last night. So far I’m digging it.

storiesSecrets We Told The City by J.R. Rogue and Kat Savage- I just finished a poetry collection by Ms. Rogue, and loved the hell out of it! Amazon suggested this collection by Ms. Rogue, and another new to me poet, Kat Savage. The theme for this collection is love in the big city.

hopeI Hope This Reaches Her in Time by R.H. Sin- Amazon is always making me spend money! This was another suggestion from them. I’m always down to discover new poets. I have a feeling that I will really love this new find.

thenThen There Was You by Claire Contreras- I loves me a second chance romance! Lately I’ve been really into them. As soon as I read the synopsis for this one, I knew I had to buy it.

“Love and the right timing were two things I didn’t believe in. Love is about walking to the edge of the cliff and taking the leap together. Timing was never on our side. My first mistake was hooking up with my best friend. My second came years later, when we met again, and I fell for her. My third was letting her go, because I had to. Because a love like this wasn’t built to withstand the winds coming in our direction. Love and timing. I didn’t believe in either. Then there was you . . .”

Yass! I’m so here for all of this goodness!

Thanks for checking out my post! Let me know what you’re reading. Until next time…

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #30

Here’s what I’m currently reading!

life drawing Life Drawing by Robin Black- Lately, I’ve really been intrigued by books about marriage. Not that I’m worshiping the concept (not anymore, lol), but I love stories dealing with the intimacy, and companionship that this kind of union provides. I’m also interested in reading about what goes wrong in marriages. When I saw Life Drawing I just had to have it… plus it was only a buck so. 🙂

Synopsis- “Augusta and Owen have taken the leap. Leaving the city and its troubling memories behind, they have moved to the country for a solitary life where they can devote their days to each other and their art, where Augusta can paint and Owen can write. But the facts of a past betrayal prove harder to escape than urban life. Ancient jealousies and resentments haunt their marriage and their rural paradise.”

Sounds dope to me!

music shopThe Music Shop by Rachel Joyce- Audiobooks aren’t usually my thing, but I signed up for a thirty day free trial with Audible. I’ve been wanting to get The Music Shop after checking out a post on Buzzfeed. The novel’s setting is a record store on a street that has seen better days. It takes place in the eighties, which I’m totally here for. The owner of the store has a knack for knowing what albums would move his customers, but when it comes to matters of the heart, Frank is a bit clueless. A mysterious woman walks in and everything changes for Frank.

I have high hopes for this one!

rougeRouge by J.R. Rogue- This is a collection of poetry that I heard was fucking incredible! I had to have this in my life. Can’t wait to get started reading this. I LOVE poetry.

That’s it! Thanks for checking out my post.

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #29

I have quite a few books that I’m currently reading, so let’s just get into the goods. 🙂
liseyLisey’s Story by Stephen King- As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, 2018 is the year of the King! I’m reading all the books by Uncle Stevie, that I hadn’t had a chance to check out. Lisey’s Story is Uncle Stevie’s version of a love story. It’s about a widow who has to deal with the demons that her late husband battled. #Intrigued
evetteLove Poems I Found In My Closet by Evette Blue- Poetry is my jam! And poems dealing with the complexities of love… those are the best kind!! This collection came highly recommended. And I’m LOVING Ms. Blue’s work so far.
Traveling Traveling Light by Vickie Johnstone- Another poetry collection because I’m just in that mood. This deals with the subject of searching; something we all can relate to.
jemJem and the Holograms Vol. 1: Showtime by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell- I was feeling nostalgic, and was in the mood to read a comic. I adored Jem when I was little! I had all the dolls, and you better believe I was obsessed with the show. I’m really hyped for this. Yass!
Thanks for checking out this post. And please let me know what you’re reading.
     Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #28

Happy Valentine’s Day, homies! Hope everyone is having a great day. No matter what, always celebrate the love that you have in your life. I’m spending Valentine’s Day with some great reads, and a nice hunk of chocolate cake for later. Anyhoo, let’s get into these Current Reads.

bite Bite Me: Bitten #1 by C.C. Wood- I haven’t read a steamy paranormal romance in awhile, and I was thankful that someone suggested this book.

“I had the perfect life; an awesome job in advertising, a gorgeous high rise apartment, and a flirtation with the guy down the hall. Then it all came crashing down. Two months later I was a cocktail waitress living in a tiny one bedroom apartment. I had also developed a serious ‘men suck’ attitude. That all changed the night I met the beautiful and enigmatic Conner Savage. But there was just one little problem…he said he was a vampire. Figures a man that hot would be batshit crazy. Or so I thought. It didn’t take me long to realize that Conner wasn’t a nut job and that I was addicted to him. With every moment we spent together he drew me deeper into his world and the supernatural culture in which he lived. Now I had a choice: the vampire I craved or a normal life. Couldn’t be easier, right?”

I’m hoping this read blows me away!

signalSignal To Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia- I was watching a BookTuber talk about Ms. Moreno-Garcia’s work, and I wanted to check it out. As I’ve said before, 2018 is the year for me to read more diversely. I believe that Signal To Noise will be an awesome read.

Synopsis: “Mexico City, 1988: Long before iTunes or MP3s, you said “I love you” with a mixtape. Meche, awkward and fifteen, has two equally unhip friends – Sebastian and Daniela – and a whole lot of vinyl records to keep her company. When she discovers how to cast spells using music, the future looks brighter for the trio. The three friends will piece together their broken families, change their status as non-entities, and maybe even find love…

Mexico City, 2009: Two decades after abandoning the metropolis, Meche returns for her estranged father’s funeral. It’s hard enough to cope with her family, but then she runs into Sebastian, reviving memories from her childhood she thought she buried a long time ago. What really happened back then? What precipitated the bitter falling out with her father? Is there any magic left?”

Sounds dope, right?!

Thanks for checking out my post!

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #27

Time for my Current Reads! I pray that 2018 continues to be a bossome reading year for me. Reading is a MAJOR part of my self-care routine, so I hope I discover more gems and less duds. Let’s get started.

bornBorn This Way by Tammy Ferebee- “Joseph is the son anyone would wish to have—anyone except his pastor father, that is. Joseph is gay, and where he comes from, his sexual orientation makes him a pariah. Tormented by the incorrigible denizens of his unprogressive Southern town, Joseph finds himself desperate for support from other members of the LGBT community. He turns to the internet with the hope of finding it, and, unexpectedly, Joseph finds more. Bruce. An unlikely virtual friendship between Joseph and Bruce grows into something more, leading to a seemingly fated meeting. Joseph’s future suddenly looks brighter than ever, but no one could’ve ever predicted what would transpire after the two finally meet.”

Doesn’t this sound fucking amazing?!?!?!

I received an ARC of this novella, and started reading it last night. I’m really digging it. y’all. I’m a fan of Ms. Ferebee’s work. She’s an incredible indie author who can write her ass off. No disrespect, but it’s the truth!

blackbirdsThe Blackbirds by Eric Jerome Dickey- Because I’m still reading Duma Key by Stephen King, I’ll be starting this novel as soon as I’m done with Born This Way.

Before I say anything else, check out the cover of this novel!! It’s everything! The Blackbirds is the tale of four best friends, with a deep bond. “As the women try to overcome— or give into— their impulses, they find not only themselves tested, but the one thing they always considered unbreakable: their friendship.”

EJD can do no wrong, so I know this novel is straight fireworks!

Thanks for checking out my post! Please share your current reads in the comments.

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #26

It’s time for another edition of Current Reads! I have two books that I’ve been wanting to check out for awhile.

twistedTwisted Minds by Keta Kendric- Most people know that MC romances totally rule my world! A friend of mine recommended this book, and said that I would love it. Here’s a little bit of the synopsis. “How in the hell did I end up here; on a heavily-wooded road in the middle of a racist county, all alone with nothing but my twisted mind for protection? After convincing the August Knights Motorcycle Club to allow me to work off a debt my sister owed them, I found myself in the middle of madness and mayhem. I should’ve known that this was what life inside this dangerous club would be like, right?” Sounds good!!!

dumaDuma Key by Stephen King- Uncle Stevie is one of my fav authors, but there are several of his books that I hadn’t gotten to yet. My goal is to read one of his books each month throughout 2018. Duma Key is about a man who survives a horrific accident, and eventually moves to Florida at the insistence of his therapist. I’m very interested to see where the story goes.

So what are you guys reading? Let a sista know!

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #25

Hey, homies! I hope that 2018 is treating you well. I’m hardcore excited to share the books that I started this week. Both books are by authors who are pretty new to me. I have a feeling that these will be some dope ass reads. 🙂

whisky A Love Letter to Whisky by Kandi Steiner- I was told that I should go in blind with this one. I’ve avoided all posts related to it, but trust me it has been difficult. So, I guess I’ll just say that this is a Contemporary/New Adult romance, and a lot of readers are digging this. Lol. I’ll give more info during my first Finished Reads (wrap-up) post of the year.

FurFuriously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson- Reading more nonfiction is one of my main 2018 reading goals. I wanted to start with something that revolved around mental illness. As someone who lives with depression and anxiety, I like learning how others deal with the drama in their heads. I stumbled upon this book during a late night search. Furiously Happy is the story of one woman’s lifelong battle with mental illness, but it’s supposed to be a tale filled with humor. Okay! I’m totally down!

Well, that’s it for this edition of Current Reads. Thanks for checking out the post! Let me know what books currently have your attention.

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #24

Happy New Year! It is my hope that 2018 is a bossome year for the followers- aka “homies” of my blog. I’m totally ready for what will be an amazing year. I’m claiming that shit right now! 🙂 Anyhoo, I’m also predicting that 2018 will be an incredible reading year. I’m thrilled beyond fucking reason for all the books that will rock my world in 2018. Reading is my escapism and I tend to overdose on it.

I will be giving mini reviews of my Current Reads in my Finished Reads posts, which will be shared at the end of every month. Basically, those are my book wrap-up posts.

Enough of me running my mouth. Let’s get into these Current Reads!

Saga Saga: Vol 1 by Brian K. Vaughn- Goodreads synopsis: “Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the world. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.”

I’ve been wanting to get into graphic novels, and apparently this is the best place to start.

SleepingSleeping With Strangers by Eric Jerome Dickey- This New York Times Bestseller is about a hitman, named Gideon who is on his way to London for a job. I’m a huge fan of EJD’s work, and one of my reading goals is to read the Gideon Series, finally.

IntensityIntensity by Dean Koontz- I’ve been told that this is one of the best suspenseful novels that I’ll ever read. We shall see! A woman visiting the home of her best friend’s family, is introduced to evil personified. So far Intensity is definitely giving me everything I need in a novel.

Thanks for checking out my post! Please share in the comments what you’re reading.

Cheers, homies!

Current Reads #23

I’m doing a little dance because it’s Current Reads time! Let’s do this! I swear I love getting excited about the little things.

takingThe Taking by Dean Koontz- I’ve never read anything by Mr. Koontz, but I know I’m in for a thrilling introduction to his work. Simply put The Taking is about chaos, disorder, and the end of all things… courtesy of who knows what.

brightBright Side by Kim Holden- I’ve heard a few BookTube peeps mention this novel. I thought I would take a chance and check it out. A young woman finds love in a new town, but has a closet filled with skeletons; my remix of the synopsis.

So what are you peeps currently reading? Let me know!

Cheers, homies!
